Lucifer (Calothorax Lucifer) hummingbirds are 3.25 inches long. The upperparts are green; eyes are marked with white spots from behind. Throat has a distinctive purple patch and the underside is rusty gray with a tint of green. The bill is long and curved. Lucifer hummingbirds are found in Arizona and west Texas.
Callilope hummingbird (Stellula calliope) is very small. Its total side does not exceed 2.75 inches. The bird has a distinctive bright green back and a crown like green patch on the head and white underside. The bill and the tail are not very long.
Buff-bellied hummingbird (Amazilia Yucatanensis) is relatively big; it is about 3.75 inches in length. The head and the breast are glimmering green. The back is also green ant the stomach is buff-tinted. The bill is thin and elongated and red at the base.
Anna's hummingbird (Calipte anna) has a distinctive crown and a gorget. In sunlight, the crown turns rosy red. The rest of the body is greenish gray. Females are less colored. They are usually white and green. In dull light it is easy to mistake an Anna's with Costa's hummingbird, which bear a strong resemblance to the Anna's in the color of the plumage.
If it were not for the wide tail and a very loud 'hum' of the wings in flight, the Broad-tailed hummingbird (Cynanthus latirostris) might be easily mistaken for the Rubythroat hummingbird. Both have iridescent bright red spots on the throat. Broad-tails are mostly concentrated along the western part of the USA, from Canada and down to the Southern lands. They can live in rocky and mountainous areas. The Ruby-throat hummingbirds' range extends farther to the east of the Mississippi.
The Ruby-throated hummingbird (Archilocus colubris) is probably the reason why many people take to bird watching. The bird can be found on a vast territory range. During migration periods, lots of ruby-throated hummingbirds can be found on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico as they prepare to fly across 500 miles of water.
